Why did my concrete sink in the first place?

Almost always it’s the soil underneath, not the concrete itself. Water washes fine soil out from under the slab, or poorly compacted fill settles over the years, or our freeze-thaw winters heave and drop the ground season after season. The slab is heavy, so the moment a void opens beneath it, gravity does the rest. The concrete is usually fine. The support under it failed.
